The PUNCH reports that the Ovim community, in the Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, is in turmoil after a soldier allegedly killed a 28-year-old man, Chinonso Nwachukwu.
Residents told PUNCH Metro that the soldier, who was in the company of his colleagues, invaded the community around 9pm on Monday.
They were said to have accused the late Nwachukwu of blocking their way.
While the victim reportedly stood up to give way for them, one of the military officers allegedly shot him in the head, killing him on the spot.
The traditional ruler of Amune community and Okwu II, HRH Eze Chigbu Ikwulagu, said community leaders were in a meeting over the incident.
“There are different versions of what happened and we are still investigating. We will come out with a statement on the matter,” he added.
A source said military personnel had taken over the community.
An official of the Nigerian Army, who confirmed the incident, said it had been reported to the Army headquarters and investigation was on.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the police were also looking into the matter.
