Details have emerged showing how the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano tried to stop his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
It was gathered that Obiano reportedly obtained a court order to stop his arrest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Thursday.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had yesterday arrested Obiano and his wife, Ebelechukwu on their way to the United States around 8.30 pm.
This comes after Obiano was placed on the watchlist of the anti-graft agency since November 2021 for alleged corruption while in office.
A report on TheCable claims that the former governor procured a court order and tried to use it to stop his arrest at the Lagos airport.
The former governor while going through immigration formalities at the airport, was informed by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) that there was an instruction to stop, arrest and hand him over to the EFCC.
At this point, Obiano reportedly reached for his bag and produced a court order stopping the EFCC from arresting him.
It was learned that the DSS officials advised Obiano to present the order to the anti-graft agency instead and was taken him into custody minutes later.
However, the spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren has also confirmed the arrest of the former governor but promised to give details later.
“It is true. He was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 8.30pm,” Uwujaren said on phone.
