Ali Modu is Borno State's first governor to serve two consecutive terms (2003–2011). Though Sheriff had held two elected offices as a member of All Nigeria People's Party, he would later join the All Progressives Congress becoming a founding member of the party.
In 2014, Sheriff defected to the People's Democratic Party.
He is currently the PDP National Acting Chairman, having been confirmed by the National Executive Committee and sworn-in in February 2016.
Ali Modu Sheriff was elected Senator representing Borno Central on the platform of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) during General Sani Abacha's military regime.
After democracy was restored, in April 1999 he was again elected Senator, Borno Central on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
