President Muhammadu Buhari
The Presidency has released a statement dismissing reports that President Muhammadu Buhari directed the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to defy the March 3 order of the Supreme court with regards to the Naira notes.
The apex bank had ruled that contrary to President Buhari's order, the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes remain legal tenders till December 2023.
Despite the court ruling, banks have refused to dispense the old notes nor accept them. Many have called out the President and the CBN for refusing to order banks to start dispensing and accepting the old notes.
In a statement released on Monday evening, the Presidency dismissed claims that President Buhari ordered the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, to defy the court order.
The presidency also stated that since Muhammadu Buhari was sworn into power, he has never directed anyone to defy court orders.
