Former President Goodluck Jonathan says politicians must put Nigeria first, even ahead of their party.
He spoke on Tuesday at the 5th National Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria in Abuja.
Bala Ngilari, a former deputy governor of Adamawa State, spoke on his behalf.
Jonathan said division along ethnic, religious and regional lines is still holding the country back.
He said Nigeria must always be bigger than any party, person or group.
He asked the former deputy governors to use their experience to build unity and guide young politicians.
He said his own time as deputy governor and governor of Bayelsa, before he became vice president and then president, taught him patience, teamwork and the value of strong institutions.
