An electric transformer exploded on Wednesday, April 3, leading to the death of a 9-year-old boy in Papalanto community in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The explosion killed Jomiloju Taiwo and injured his sister, seven-year-old Pipeloluwa Taiwo, leaving her with burns.
The aforementioned are children of one Mr Taiwo Nicholas, a resident of the community.
The incident happened at about 1.33pm when the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company restored power supply to the community shortly after a power outage. Shortly after power was restored, a loud noise was heard, which was suspected to have come from the electric transformer.
The explosion gutted Nicholas’ building, which was just a few feet away from the transformer.
The siblings were found lying unconscious on the kitchen floor when their mother rushed to the apartment following the explosion.
While the two victims were being rushed to the hospital, the older sibling, Jomiloju, died. Pipeloluwa is still receiving treatment in hospital having sustained severe burns both on the feet and hands.
This comes just days after a 15-year-old girl was allegedly electrocuted in the Olomore Housing Estate in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The teenager was said to have come in contact with a naked cable that was placed in a pumping machine inside a well while she was fetching water from it on April 1.
She was jolted immediately after the contact and confirmed dead by a doctor on duty at a hospital.
