Two police officers and a driver have been shot dead during an attempt by gunmen to kidnap Mrs. Christy Uroye, wife of the lawmaker representing Warri South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Augustine Uroye.
It was gathered that the incident happened at Okoloba Junction, along Jakpa road in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday night, September 2, 2024.
Eyewitnesses said the abductors shot the driver and the police officers escorting the lawmaker's wife in the SUV before they abducted her.
According to Punch, the gunmen crashed their getaway vehicle along the busy road while trying to escape with the captive, thus allowing for Mrs. Uroye’s rescue.
The victim is said to be currently receiving treatment at a nearby private hospital.
Eyewitnesses narrated that during the attack, residents of the area were forced to flee from the scene to avoid getting hit by stray bullets.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident to the publication, adding that the operation was “not successful.”
Edafe further stated in a terse message that three AK-47 rifles were recovered from the suspects’ vehicle.
A family source who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, on the condition of anonymity, said;
“The abductors’ vehicle got involved in an accident along the road with their captive while the woman is now receiving treatment in a private hospital in the locality."
