The Anambra State Police Command has arrested some of its officers on patrol accused of shooting dead a 24-year-old man identified as Ebuka along Onitsha/Owerrri road in the state on Wednesday, September 4.
Human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, who shared the sad story online, said the officers went into hiding after allegedly committing the atrocity. Harrison said the deceased was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead. He said late Ebuka's body had been deposited at the mortuary.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Police in the state, CP Nnaghe Itam, ordered the detention of the patrol team members. A statement released by the command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said a preliminary investigation indicated that a police corporal was among the patrol team.
Ikenga said the CP has directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, (SCID), Awka and called for calm, assuring that the Command will ensure a thorough investigation into the case for justice to prevail.
