On Monday, gunmen attacked the Umunze Police Station in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, setting it on fire and killing two policemen.
The gang reportedly attacked the police facility with improvised explosives, shooting continuously, as fire gutted a part of the station.
It was learnt that two police operatives on duty were killed in the gun battle as they attempted to resist the assailants.
Confirming the attack, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the bodies of the deceased policemen had been recovered and taken to a morgue.
He also mentioned that joint security forces, including the police, the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy, civil defence, and other agencies, recovered five unexploded improvised explosives and were going after members of the armed secessionist group responsible for the attack.
Ikenga further noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the scene for on-the-spot assessment to reinforce and reassess security deployment.
He called on anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward, assuring that such information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
