chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has advised African Nations to use the Election Risk Management (ERM) tool as a guide for the successful organization of political elections.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega whose tenure in office is set to expire, advised African Nations on the efficacy of the Election Risk Management tool that ensured the successful general elections recently concluded in Nigeria.

This address was made at a Workshop organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance on ERM.

“The tool has enabled us to do electoral risk mapping to generate data and do analysis to support a range of activities targeted at either mitigating risks or taking proactive measures in ensuring the conduct of free, fair, credible and especially peaceful elections”, Jega said.

The ERM is designed to build users’ capacity to understand electoral risk factors, collect and analyse risk data, design prevention and mitigation strategies, as well as record the results of actions. This is an efficient tool that helped developed countries around the world to achieve success in general elections. It has reportedly being tested in Colombia, Sri Lanka, Bosnia Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kenya.

Electoral management bodies in Nigeria and Nepal have also adopted the tool while six African countries over the next three years will be implementing the tool in partnership with the African Union.

Jega ended up his speech by expressing an interest to serve his country again at the national level.
