Tensions rose in Abuja after operatives of the Nigeria Police Force’s Inspector-General’s Monitoring Unit allegedly shot and injured an employee of Olusco Group of Companies while enforcing a disputed land claim in favor of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).
The victim, identified as Mr. Yakubu Lawal Omaye, sustained gunshot injuries allegedly inflicted by an officer named Taiwo, said to have been acting under the orders of CSP Patrick Lamin.
According to SaharaReporters, it was gathered that the incident occurred a few days ago at the contested estate site in Games Village, Abuja, during a confrontation between the company and individuals loyal to Mr. Pretty Okafor, who claims to be the president of PMAN.
Pretty was reportedly suspended from the association for visa fraud and misappropriation of funds.
The victim, identified as Mr. Yakubu Lawal Omaye, sustained gunshot injuries allegedly inflicted by an officer named Taiwo, said to have been acting under the orders of CSP Patrick Lamin.
The company told SaharaReporters on Wednesday that the police stormed the site despite an existing court case over the property, which is yet to be resolved.
Outraged by what they described as police brutality, intimidation, and bias, dozens of Olusco Group staff staged a protest in Abuja, demanding justice for their injured colleague and condemning what they see as “institutional intimidation on behalf of PMAN.”
Leading the protest, Olusco Group Chairman, Mr. Olumeyan Oluwafemi, accused the police of contempt of court and complicity in the land tussle.
He alleged that the security operatives had been compromised to silence him, claiming there were even plans to have him arrested, poisoned, and killed in detention.
“This is a business transaction that started in 2023,” Oluwafemi explained. “PMAN gave me one of their properties in Abuja for a joint venture. The agreement was that I would develop the property, take 60 percent, and give them 40 percent. I paid ₦225 million as a premium and began processing the paperwork. The matter is still in court, yet the police are attempting to forcefully hand over the site to PMAN.”
He said, "I completed all the paperwork, spending about ₦700 million, and secured approval to build towers — in fact, the biggest project in Abuja. It took me about one and a half years because of the usual government bureaucracy.
"Once I got the approval, Pretty Okafor, who was the president of P-Man at the time, suddenly came up with a different plan. He said he had someone else he wanted to give the project to. I thought it was a joke — after I had struggled for two years to secure approvals that Okafor and his people had been trying to get for over 10 years without success. He wanted to take it away and hand it to someone who knew nothing about it.
"He then offered to compensate me with ₦500 million and return all the money that I have spent, claiming Senator Abba Moro wanted to take over the project. I told him that if he wanted that, we must go to court. The only place to dissolve our marriage was in court, not by his word. That's the condition to dissolve this agreement."
According to Oluwafemi, two days later, Senator Moro’s aide showed up at the site with some men, claiming they had taken over.
He said, “I wasn’t even in town. My staff alerted me, so I sent a colleague, also a developer, to assess the situation. When he got there, the lady refused to speak with me on the phone and claimed they had already paid Pretty.
"Not long after, another group came, also claiming Pretty had signed an agreement with them on the same property, despite my subsisting agreement. When I confronted them, they said I should name my price and accept a billionaire’s compensation. I knew then the matter was becoming very serious.
"I called respected members of the association — Ruggedman, 2Face, Zaaki, and others — who were signatories to the original agreement. They all told me they knew nothing about Pretty's actions and advised me to ignore him.”
"Later, Pretty came again, saying he had an investor from Brazil ready to bring $20 million to fund the project through PMAN’s account, and even wanted Julius Berger to handle it. I told him this was not in line with our agreement. Clearly, he was only trying to edge me out," he said.
He said eventually, he secured a developer who paid him a premium of ₦280 million to join the project, since he had already spent over ₦2 billion.
Oluwafemi explained that the project value was about ₦200 billion, and he asked him to provide proof of funds of at least 10% — ₦20 billion. But he struggled to pay even the premium, taking six months to complete it in bits.
He said, "Throughout last year, he could not show any meaningful capacity. When I returned from Dubai in December, I confronted him. He kept saying he was ‘expecting money.’ I even offered him ₦500 million of my own funds to kickstart the project, with the condition that he would return it once investors came in. He refused, claiming it could be money laundering.
"Soon after, he brought the police to the site, blocking me and my staff. On February 2 this year, they stormed the site with about 40 officers in trucks, harassed and beat my staff. This harassment continued for almost two months, all through the IGP’s monitoring unit.
"I resisted them by mobilizing people daily. Each time they came, we filmed them and forced them to retreat.
"About a month ago, I was summoned again over another case instigated by Pretty Okafor. This same person (Pretty) has since been suspended from the association for visa fraud and misappropriation of funds. Yet, he still parades himself as president, with police backing him against a valid court judgment.”
"When I couldn’t attend one of their phone summons from London, they attacked my site again. One of my staff, mistaken for me, was shot at by a DSP named Taiwo. Later, an insider told me the police had been paid to eliminate me, either by poisoning me in detention or shooting me," Oluwafemi said.
Oluwafemi told SaharaReporters that he immediately sought court protection.
"My lawyer has secured four different orders: restraining police from coming to the site, protecting my fundamental human rights, quashing the police investigation report since the case is already in court, and further clarifying that police must stay off until judicial review,” he said.
"Despite serving these orders on the police legal department, the monitoring unit has refused to obey. We even petitioned the IGP, attaching the orders. Yet, intimidation continues.
"Just yesterday, DSP Taiwo returned with armed men to arrest me at the site, despite the orders. We resisted, showed them the documents, and demanded a warrant. They left, only to later send an Uber driver with a questionable warrant. We rejected it, insisting they obey the court first."
"This is what we’ve been facing — constant intimidation, harassment, and threats to my life. One of my staff members was almost killed because of mistaken identity. I want the public to know that despite valid court orders, the police are aiding Pretty Okafor and others to take over this project illegally, and my life is in danger," Oluwafemi added.
However, he called on the Inspector General of Police and other relevant authorities to intervene urgently, stressing that the police have no business enforcing land claims in what remains a civil matter before the courts.
Meanwhile, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has granted an order restraining the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, the Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit, CP Akin Fakorede, and others in a case involving Olusco Heritage and Investment Ltd and Oluwafemi Olumeyan.
