Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has opened up about masculinity, emotional resilience, and the importance of seeking help, stressing that while men are built to be protectors, they also need healing and support.
Speaking during a recent interview, the actor acknowledged the natural instinct of men to shield those around them, saying that stepping up in difficult situations is something he considers a non-negotiable responsibility.
"My job is to protect the people around me. If gbege happens here now, the chances are I'm going to step in front. It's what needs to happen, there's no excuse," he said.
However, Deyemi was equally emphatic that physical and emotional strength should not stop men from confronting their inner struggles and seeking help when needed.
He revealed that he has built a solid support system for his most difficult moments, keeping a therapist and trusted mentors on speed dial for times when things get tough. He also spoke candidly about leaning on his wife when the emotional weight becomes too much to carry alone.
"Let me just tell you the truth, when the thing is just too hard, there's my wife.
She's not the first… because she's dealing with her own business and raising the family. But when it's hitting me too hard, I'll wake her in the middle of the night and tell her to help me," he said.
His remarks have resonated widely online, with many commending him for openly addressing the emotional realities men face beneath the surface of strength.
