In what will come across as a rather surprising tactical move, the Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has left captain William Troost-Ekong on the bench for Nigeria’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.
The 32-year-old defender, who was the first player to arrive at camp for the double-header, is replaced by 20-year-old Benjamin Fredrick.
This marks only the second appearance for the national team for the FCV Dender EH defender, who will now partner Calvin Bassey in the heart of the Eagles’ defense.
According to the team list seen by TheCable, in Troost-Ekong’s absence, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi will lead the team out as the stand-in captain.
The starting lineup shows a strong attacking front, with Ademola Lookman starting alongside the in-form duo of Victor Osimhen and Moses Simon.
However, Lookman’s inclusion comes despite the winger being frozen out at his club, Atalanta, and not featuring for them this season.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has overcome an injury scare to start in goal. The midfield will be anchored by Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, and captain-for-the-day Ndidi.
The Super Eagles, currently a disappointing fourth in Group A with just seven points from six matches, face a must-win scenario.
A victory is essential against the Amavubi of Rwanda to keep their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes alive.
The match kicks off at 5pm at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Super Eagles Starting XI: Stanley Nwabali, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Benjamin Fredrick, Bruno Onyemaechi; Wilfred Ndidi (C), Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka; Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen.
