My Son's Brain Was Ruined By Fanatics - Father Of Tunisian Terrorist Cries Out

The father of Tunisian gunman, Seifeddine Rezgui last night claimed extremists had 'ruined' his son's brain as details continued to emerge of the killer's background.

As details continued to emerge of the Tunisian terrorist, Seifeddine Rezgui's background, father of the gunman who slaughtered 38 in a beach massacre, last night claimed extremists had ruined his son’s brain.

Hakim Rezgui said:

"These people ruined my son’s brain with horrid thoughts and ideas, they broke him. People keep asking me for information and I don’t know what to tell them, I was completely taken aback by the news of what my son had done. I had just got back from work at 11.30am, I work on the railway lines.

"I went to sleep as it’s Ramadan and I was fasting, then at 4pm the police came to my house and said they needed me to come with them. I asked why and they said, 'Haven’t you been watching the news?' And that’s when they told me.

"I was shocked of course, I didn’t realise it was even happening. He’s been going to university and doing well, and that’s all I knew.’

Speaking outside the family home after being released from police questioning yesterday, Mr Rezgui said:

"I wish there had been no victims, no one hurt. I wish it had never happened. Because when I see the victims I think it could have been my own family. I had no idea and I am really sorry. I am upset to see those victims. I feel the loss of the families so strongly. I feel like I have died along with the victims. I am so ashamed for me, for his mother, for all our family."

Mr Rezgui, a labourer working on farms and railways for £10 a day, told ITV News his son had made new friends and spent all his time at university or a coffee shop. Adding that he had no idea of the young man’s plans, he said: ‘My son lost his life and he has lost our lives too. He has lost his life, his studies, his future and he’s ended our lives too.’
