Asian Man Narrates How Police Complaint Unit Helped Recover N150,000 Extorted By Officer In Lagos (Video)

An Asian man has shared how the Nigeria Police Force Complaint Response Unit assisted him in recovering N150,000 that a police officer in Lagos had allegedly extorted from him.

The man, who spoke in a video currently circulating online on Saturday, said the incident occurred on Friday night in the Ikeja area of Lagos State while he was heading to a bar with a friend to watch a football match.

According to him, the Uber vehicle conveying them was stopped by police officers on a bridge in Ikeja, where he was asked to present his passport and visa.

He said, “For this invitation, actually, I want to express my deep appreciation for the CSP, Mr Inadu. I want to share some of my experience and what happened on Friday night.

“At that time, I was with my friend. We were taking an Uber and going to see a football match because, you know, the Nigeria versus Morocco match. At that time, I was on duty, so I missed the match and really wanted to know the outcome.

“So we chosen to go to a bar to see the match, but unfortunately, when we are passing, you know, a bridge in Ikeja, Lagos, so the officer actually stopped my Uber and want to check in about my passport and check in about the visa.”

He explained that he did not have his passport with him at the time, but contacted his staff to send photographs of the documents to his phone to prove his legal status in the country.

“But actually, at that time, I did not take a passport with me. So I have to let my staff go to my bedroom and take the pictures for the police to see,” he said.

However, he alleged that the officers became hostile, forcibly pulled him out of the vehicle and threatened him with their weapons.

He said, “But I don’t know, maybe the police, they are not very friendly to me, so he was just very rude, actually, just grabbed me outside and about the car and just using their weapons to threaten me, to ask me for the money.

“So at that time, I was very, you know, scared about that because, you know, for such a long time I came to Nigeria, I did not see these things happen to me because, you know, I have registered a legal visa. I do my temporary working passport here.”

The man claimed that despite his attempts to explain, the officers insisted on collecting money from him, forcing him to transfer N150,000 to them to secure his release.

He said, “So at that time I was trying to communicate with him, but he did not listen, so finally I had to transfer 150,000 Naira to these officers to keep myself safe.”

Afterwards, upon receiving the passport images, which confirmed his legal residency, he said he realised the extortion was unjust and decided to seek help.

He said he found the police Complaint Response Unit online and sent an email detailing his experience, attaching evidence, including transfer records and his visa documents.

According to him, officials of the unit responded within hours and requested additional details to investigate the matter.

He added, “I wrote an email briefly explaining what we experienced. Within two or three hours, the staff of the CRU called me back and asked me to send details, transfer records and my visa documents so they could clearly understand what happened.

“Before this, I had tried to speak with some police officers to ask what I should do, but they just told me not to worry and that they would get back to me.

“On Sunday, throughout the whole weekend when everyone was resting, an officer from the CRU, Anthony Chukuma, did not rest at all. He spent the entire day calling the DPO of Ikeja Division and helping to gather evidence. He was always trying to calm me down.

“I also want to say a big thank you to the DPO of Ikeja Division, Akin Umi, who showed great integrity and immediately started an internal investigation to identify the officers involved.”

He disclosed that following the intervention of the CRU and the Ikeja Division, N150,000 was refunded to his bank account on Monday morning.

“With the cooperation of the CRU and the Ikeja Division, my money was recovered. N150,000 was paid back into my bank account,” he said.
