In a major shakeup for the Ogun State 2027 governorship race, Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially suspended her gubernatorial bid.

Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, has announced her withdrawal from the 2027 Ogun State governorship contest. Her departure comes after the All Progressives Congress (APC) chose Senator Solomon Adeola, also known as Yayi, as its consensus candidate.

She explained that the move followed the outcome of a key party meeting held in Abeokuta, where Adeola was adopted by party leaders.

The former candidate announced her choice in a statement on Monday evening. Iyabo Obasanjo, who is the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, had been in the race for the APC ticket before the party leadership aligned behind a single candidate.

She made the following statement:

“I congratulate him and wish him every success. I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process.

“Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration.

“To my supporters across Ogun State, I am deeply grateful for your calm, steadfast support and unwavering trust throughout this journey. Together, we move forward with patience, strength and hope.”

The Ogun APC views her withdrawal as a significant event, as it clears the path for Senator Adeola ahead of the party’s primaries and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

According to Politics Nigeria, Adeola, who presently serves as Ogun West's senatorial representative, received support during a caucus meeting at the APC secretariat in Abeokuta.
