Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, has authorized a weekly day off and a monthly transportation allowance of ₦10,000 for state employees.
The palliative measures, which go into effect in April 2026 and last for the first three months, are intended to lessen the financial strain of transportation expenses on employees in light of the recent rise in petrol pump prices.
The State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, said in a statement that qualified employees will receive a special transportation allowance in addition to one day off per week.
He said, "The initiative is aimed at alleviating the commuting challenges faced by workers, while also boosting morale and enhancing productivity across the public service."
Onasanya, however, clarified that some categories of workers would be exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the essential nature of their duties.
“These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teaching and non-teaching staff at all levels of education, security personnel, Accounting Officers, Heads of Departments, as well as other critical duty officers whose presence is indispensable,” he said.
He further stated that impacted personnel will still receive the ₦10,000 monthly transport payment even though they were exempt from the day-off policy.
The Head of Service went on to say that in order to avoid interfering with government operations, Accounting Officers in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) would choose the precise day off for qualified employees.
Calling the action "timely and considerate,” Onasanya commended Governor Abiodun for demonstrating commitment to workers’ welfare in the face of economic challenges. He urged public servants to reciprocate the gesture by showing greater dedication, discipline, and improved service delivery.
He pointed out that despite current economic challenges, the action demonstrates the state government's commitment to maintaining efficiency in public service while supporting its staff.
