Princess Diana’s Iconic Revenge Dress Heads to Auction

Princess Diana's famous revenge dress is going up for auction in New York in December with estimates between 150,000 and 300,000 dollars.

Diana wore the black silk gown to a Vanity Fair event in June 1994, just hours after her estranged husband Prince Charles admitted on television that he had been unfaithful.

The off-the-shoulder design with a draped skirt and mini train became one of the most iconic dresses in fashion history.

Diana paired the look with a pearl necklace, red nail polish and black tights.

Former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter said nobody at the event realized the dress was intentionally sending a message until they read the papers the next day and learned Charles had been caught admitting his affair publicly.

The dress was custom made by designer Christina Stambolian.

Diana actually had it made before she and Charles separated in 1992 but kept it in her closet for three years before deciding to wear it to the gallery event at the last minute.

What made the dress so bold was that royals rarely wear black except for mourning, and Diana had rarely been seen in cocktail dresses that ended above the knee.

Her accessories also told a story, featuring pieces given to her as wedding and engagement gifts by the royal family.

The dress was sold at auction once before in July 1997 for about 53,000 dollars.

This time auction house Sotheby's expects it to fetch much more given its legendary status in fashion and popular culture.
