The Enugu State Government has confirmed the detention of a woman identified as Mrs. Ogechi John, in connection with the alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John.
This was made known through a statement released on Monday via the WhatsApp media platform of Governor Peter Mbah.
The suspect, who is said to hail from the Oderiko community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested by Nigeria Police Force operatives in relation to the child's death.
The incident reportedly took place at the family's home in Nchatancha, Emene, within Enugu East Local Government Area. Based on accounts from residents of the area, the deceased is said to have endured repeated abuse prior to the fatal incident, which allegedly occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Responding to the incident, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, affirmed that the state government would pursue prosecution of the suspect to the full extent of the law. She emphasized that the Mbah administration maintains a zero-tolerance stance on child abuse and acted swiftly upon learning of the tragedy to ensure the suspect's arrest.
She further stated that the government would closely follow both the investigation and legal proceedings to ensure that justice is served without undue delay, stressing that the killing of a child in Enugu State would not be tolerated and is wholly condemned.
The state government reaffirmed its dedication to child protection, warning that anyone found culpable in cases of child abuse or violence against minors would be prosecuted.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations are ongoing. However, authorities are yet to disclose which police division is handling the case or officially confirm the precise cause of the child's death.
