The Lagos State Government has revealed that the Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL) currently records over 42,000 passenger movements daily through approximately 1,000 bus trips across the state, as part of ongoing efforts to expand affordable public transportation.

The figures were disclosed in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Bolanle Ogunlola, and presented at the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking the third year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's second term.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the performance reflects sustained efforts to modernize Lagos' transport network and improve mobility across road, rail, and water systems.

According to the report presented at the briefing, LBSL has transported a cumulative total of over 60.8 million passengers from May 2019 to February 2025, with current daily patronage averaging more than 42,000 passengers.

The agency's fares have also remained comparatively lower than those charged by informal transport operators, making it a key instrument for affordable mobility in the state.

Osiyemi noted that the bus network now covers all five IBILE divisions and 13 Local Government Areas, including Ibeju-Lekki, Ojo, and Ikorodu, operating across 21 corridors and over 40 bus service routes, supported by six depots and a fleet of 300 buses.

The briefing also highlighted broader transport achievements under the Sanwo-Olu administration. Over 3.5 million passengers have used the Blue Rail Line, while operations on the Red Line Rail have been expanded with additional coaches to cut waiting times.

Ongoing projects include the Blue Line Phase II extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, as well as junction upgrades at several major corridors including Toyin Street, Opebi Road, and Allen Avenue.

Intelligent traffic management systems have also been deployed in key areas such as Ikeja, Lekki, Ikoyi, Surulere, Epe, Gbagada, and Victoria Island.

On the waterways front, approximately two million passengers now use Lagos waterways monthly, supported by ferry expansion, safety campaigns, life jacket distribution, and the OMI-EKO electric ferry initiative.

Looking ahead, Osiyemi said several new projects are planned for 2026, including the Green and Purple Rail Line projects, the Lekki Water Taxi initiative, AI-powered driver simulators, and expanded smart mobility systems.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, emphasized that the administration's transport reforms represent a transformation far broader than rail and road infrastructure alone, describing the initiatives as part of a wider vision to build a more connected and technology-driven mobility system across Lagos State.
