Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's handling of insecurity in Nigeria as a national tragedy.
Atiku made this known through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, on Tuesday, in reaction to the death of House of Representatives member Abba Adamu, who was killed by bandits after spending nine days in captivity.
Adamu had been abducted along the Kaduna-Abuja highway on May 3, 2026, and his death was announced on Tuesday.
Responding to the incident, Atiku described Adamu's killing as yet another reflection of the deepening security crisis under the Tinubu administration.
He argued that the death of a former federal lawmaker at the hands of criminals is not just a personal loss, but a damning indictment of a government that has failed in its most fundamental constitutional responsibility the protection of lives and property.
Atiku was scathing in his assessment, suggesting that the administration appears either overwhelmed, indifferent, or dangerously incapable of confronting what he described as a national emergency.
He questioned what hope remains for ordinary Nigerians without influence or protection, if a former member of the National Assembly could be abducted on one of the country's most important highways and die in captivity.
He stressed that the situation has moved beyond isolated incidents and has become a deeply troubling pattern, with Nigerians being kidnapped from highways, farms, communities, and their homes, while the government continues to respond with empty statements and recycled assurances that bear little resemblance to the daily reality faced by citizens.
