Church Steps In as Floods Leave Over 36,000 Akwa Ibom Residents Affected

A church has donated food, mosquito nets and other relief items to 1,500 people affected by floods in Akwa Ibom State.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also gave out 268 wheelchairs and 181 walking aids to people with mobility issues.

The donations came after heavy rains and storms flooded large parts of the state, affecting more than 36,000 people across 16 local government areas.

Families lost homes, food, shelter and basic necessities.

A church leader said the donation showed their commitment to helping people in need.

He stressed that the church helps everyone regardless of their religion, seeing all people as children of God.

He also urged residents to keep their environment clean and plant trees to help prevent future flooding.

The state government promised to distribute the aid fairly and transparently, making sure it goes only to people genuinely affected by the floods.

Officials said they have carefully checked and verified information about affected families so help reaches those who need it most.

A flood victim thanked the church and the state government for their support.

Government officials said the partnership with charitable organisations will continue as they work to help people across the state hit by disasters.
