Nigeria's Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake has expressed condolences following the collapse of a gold mine in Sudan that killed several artisanal miners.
The Al-Zaraa gold mine in West Kordofan, Sudan collapsed and several miners remain missing as rescue efforts continue.
Alake sent his thoughts to families who lost loved ones.
The minister, who chairs the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, called for urgent support for the rescue operation and stronger safety measures for artisanal miners across Africa.
Alake said the incident shows the risks faced by artisanal miners and stressed the need for better safety training and oversight in the sector.
He said no amount of gold is worth a human life.
