Hayden Panettiere Dies at 36 After Accidental Drug Overdose

Actor Hayden Panettiere died from an accidental drug overdose involving fentanyl, according to a South Carolina coroner on Tuesday.

Emergency responders were called to a residence in Greenville on August 16.

She was pronounced dead despite advanced life support efforts.

An autopsy found the cause was the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine.

There were no signs of trauma.

Her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were at the residence.

They called 911.

Brian showed officers a bag of her medications.

Zach later said Brian gave her Narcan, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses, after finding her unconscious.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and other authorities investigated.

Police found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Panettiere was 36. She had previously been open about struggling with drugs and alcohol abuse.

She became addicted to alcohol and opioids as a teenager.

She discussed addiction in her memoir "This Is Me: A Reckoning," along with experiences of physical abuse and postpartum depression.

In May, she told CBS News she hoped sharing her story would help others.

She said she wanted people to know they don't have to be afraid and can live their truth despite being imperfect.

She said she was working on herself and was healthier and better than she had been in a long time.
