Otti Explains Why He Supports Tinubu Despite Being in Labour Party

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has clarified his position on President Tinubu's 2027 re-election bid, saying his support is rooted in his role as a state governor and member of the national economic council.

Speaking in an interview, Otti addressed questions about how a Labour Party governor could back an APC president, explaining that he is not in a position to oppose Tinubu's candidacy.

Doing so while remaining part of the federal government, he suggested, would create internal conflict and destabilisation.

Otti drew a distinction between supporting Tinubu's administration and the Labour Party fielding its own presidential candidate for 2027.

When pressed on whether he was supporting Tinubu personally, he acknowledged the reality of his situation but clarified that the Labour Party has its own presidential candidate.

The governor said that as a member of government decisions and policies, particularly through the National Economic Council, he is involved in federal initiatives.

This involvement, he argued, requires a certain level of alignment with the administration.

Rather than publicly oppose the President, Otti said he raises concerns and disagreements during internal government meetings.

Opposition, he stressed, would undermine the functioning of the government from within.

He noted that some Tinubu policies align with his own thinking, citing the removal of fuel subsidy as an example.

He described the subsidy as unsustainable and acknowledged that several government initiatives resonate with his own views and approach.
