Russian attacks across Ukraine on Wednesday killed at least 28 people, including five children who died when a missile hit an apartment block in Pryluky, in the north of the country, while they slept.

The blast destroyed half of the five-storey building.

Ukrainian authorities say 20 people died in the Pryluky strike alone.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said three of the dead children were just 12 months old and another was eight.

Seven other children were among dozens wounded.

He called the strikes a deliberate choice of terror against ordinary cities and ordinary life.

A resident, 40-year-old Olena Sayun, said the family was asleep when the windows blew out. S

he and her husband covered their child with their bodies and ran to the bathroom while the apartment was torn apart around them.

The attack came a day after Zelensky warned of a massive Russian strike aimed mostly at energy infrastructure.

Two people died in Kremenchuk and two in Oleksandriya.

In Kyiv, two people died in a fire caused by a strike in the Darnytskyi area, and two more were killed in later attacks, according to mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Ukraine's air force said Russia fired at least 50 missiles and 130 drones overnight at regions including Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, Kharkiv and Poltava.

Zelensky said ballistic missiles are the biggest challenge and that Ukraine urgently needs new air defences.

Power cuts left parts of Kyiv in darkness, and many residents spent the night in subway stations.

Two people were also killed in a drone strike in the Russian-held part of Kherson, and two more near Donetsk.

Zelensky said Ukraine hit back at two oil facilities and a training ground in the Perm, Samara and Astrakhan regions, as well as the Black Sea.
