The Kebbi State Government says its pension and severance decisions for former governors follow the law, not politics.
Commissioner for Information and Culture Alhaji Yakubu Birnin Kebbi spoke at a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.
He pointed to the 1999 Constitution and a 2004 state law on pensions for former governors and deputy governors.
He also cited a 2010 directive from the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
According to the government, these rules do not cover certain benefits for governors who served between 1991 and 1993.
He said the issue is about the law and has nothing to do with personal grudges.
He added that Governor Nasir Idris still respects elder statesmen.
The state has helped former leaders with money, medical trips abroad and other support.
It also named a hall at Government House after a former governor in 2025.
He denied that the governor has been avoiding his predecessors.
He said Idris has reached out to political leaders for support, and officials and media aides have visited former leaders at home to pass on greetings.
He asked former leaders to recognise the projects the government is carrying out in their communities, no matter their party.
He also asked critics to back up their claims with facts.
The government said it preferred to handle the matter privately but chose to speak publicly for transparency.
