A young boy gave medics a fright after he was treated unsuccessful for a wrong diagnosis.

Hairpin lodged in the boy's stomach

Doctors were shocked after spending three unsuccessful months trying to help a boy suffering unexplained pain, fever and chills, only to discover that he swallowed a hairpin.

The four-year-old was initially diagnosed of having urinary tract infection, but the boy's symptoms didn't improve with antibiotics forcing medics to carry an x-ray. They were stunned to spot the hairpin lodged in his stomach. Further x-ray carried out showed that the boy's kidney had been pierced by the pin and was in need of urgent surgery.

The little boy admitted swallowing the pin about a month before he felt ill, but his concerned parents were told not to worry as he would pass it. The team from Jeddah, who treated the Saudi Arabian boy, said he made a full recovery. The case was reported in the British Medical Journal. Authors said: “It is common for children to swallow small objects and these usually pass harmlessly through the gastrointestinal tract. Complications are rare, for example, in this case report of a young boy who swallowed a hair pin."
