The Delta State House of Assembly has approved the sixth alteration to the 1999 Constitution, which would pave the way for state police.
All 23 lawmakers present voted yes.
Nobody voted no or stayed away.
Speaker Emomotimi Guwor said the move could help police respond faster to trouble in local communities.
He said better intelligence gathering could help protect lives and property and make the state a safer place for investors.
The vote is part of the state's MORE Agenda under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The Assembly has asked its clerk to send the decision to the National Assembly.
The change still needs more steps at the national level before it can take effect.
Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila recently said the National Policing Bill is 90 per cent ready to go to the National Assembly.
