A 60-year old church usher, Marion Condis, was arrested in Florida and charged with one count of grand theft and three counts of petty theft on Sunday after CCTV surveillance cameras caught him stealing from the offering baskets as the congregation closed their eyes and bowed their heads in prayer.
Officials at the Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Ocala who suspected that one of their volunteer ushers was stealing from the church’s offering baskets, called the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
So detectives placed surveillance cameras in a number of services at the church. Police said Condis was seen stealing during each mass.
And during Spanish mass on November 8, detectives positioned themselves around the church and witnessed Condis taking money from the baskets and stuffing it into his pockets.
The surveillance footage also captured him approaching the offering baskets in a storage area and brazenly grabbing handfuls of bills. He then appears to leave before returning twice to clear out every last coin from the collection.
When Condis later approached the church altar, detectives made contact with him and recovered a total of $349.05 from his pockets.
Condis was released from the Marion County Jail after posting a $3,500 bond on Sunday evening.
