Admit it, moms, when the weather outside is frightful, sometimes so are your fashion choices. It can be hard to look stylish when bundled up in layers of clothing to stay warm.

But it’s easy to up your winter fashion game with a few simple tips.

Do:

Pair loose tops with fitted pants or fitted tops with loose bottoms.

You want to make sure your outfit is balanced. It never looks good to be too fitted or too loose. If you’re not comfortable wearing a fitted top, it’s perfectly OK to wear a loose top or cute, oversized sweater with fitted pants or jeans. And fitted tops look great with flowy skirts. If your outfit needs a little more shape, you can always add a belt. Adding other winter accessories, such as scarves, tights, and boots, also adds dimension.

Get cozy with a vest and a button-up shirt.

When cold weather arrives, it’s the perfect time to start layering your outfits. Flannel, chambray and basic button-up shirts pair nicely with winter-style vests. And luckily there are plenty of vest styles to choose from — puffer, quilted, down, and even fake fur and sherpa.

Add a stylish blazer or cardigan with a flowy blouse.

You don’t have to say bye to blouses when winter arrives. Short sleeve and long sleeve blouses under a blazer or cardigan bring a professional and polish look to your ensemble. Your blazer’s hem should hit your hip bone and the sleeves should reach the middle of your thumb when your arms are held out. And since cardigans come in different shapes and lengths, there are rules to follow there too.

And, most importantly...find clothes that fit your figure.

When you’re swapping out your clothes each season, it’s a good time to get rid of clothes that you haven’t worn in a while. If you’re unsure about a top, sweater or pair of pants, try it on. If it’s too big or too small, it’s time to donate it. Only keep clothes that flatter your figure. This way, when you’re trying to figure out what to wear, you only have the right items in your closet.

Don’t wear:

“Mom” jeans.

Invest in quality jeans that fit your right. Pair skinny jeans and jeggings with knee-high riding boots, and cropped styles with ankle boots.

Sweatpants and sneakers.

Although both are comfortable, they do nothing for you if you want to rock your style. So keep your sweatpants for lounging around the house, and your sneakers for running and working out.

Baggy tops.

Tops that are too loose will make you look bigger than you are. Try to swap out your baggy tops with ones that give you a little more shape.

Old, worn-out...pants, tops, sweaters.

If you notice that an item in your closet looks old and is fading in color, piling too much, or getting loose threads, it’s time to get rid of it. Wearing these items may show people that you don’t care about your appearance.
