A 101-year-old woman has been filmed receiving a round of applause as she is discharged from hospital after recovering from coronavirus.

In the video, the elderly woman smiles and waves after surviving a two-week battle with Covid-19 at San Jorge de Huesca hospital in Biescas, northeastern Spain.

While she is wheeled out of the hospital on a gurney, several members of the member team join the procession to clap and cheer for her on her way out

The lady is seen waving at the staff as she is pushed through the doors and her daughter Mari Carmen shows her gratitude by waving and blowing kisses at them during the heartwarming incident yesterday.

Mari posted a video thanking everyone for assisting in Encarnacion’s recovery, saying: “I want to thank the doctor who performed very well.

“I cannot thank him enough. I also want to thank the nurses and the entire staff that attended us wonderfully and took care of us giving us everything we needed.

She went on to offer encouragement to others that may be suffering from the virus, adding: “I hope this serves as hope for everyone that is ill.

“My mother at 101 years of age has got through this. This illness has treatment. We have to fight this because there is a way through this.”

The elderly woman was immediately checked into hospital on March 15 after testing positive for the virus due to her advanced age.

It is believed she may have contracted the virus after a family member visited her in early March to attend a neighbour’s funeral.

Nuria Pargada, the mayor of Biescas, said: “She has given hope and encouragement to continue fighting and her family is very grateful to the medical staff, neighbours and friends for their support.”

The mayor said she regretted the “bad situation in Biescas” where cases of Covid-19 continue to rise.

Spain has been one of the hardest-hit countries, with 102,136 cases leading to 8,464 deaths, according to the latest figures from John Hopkins University.
