In what will come across as a really startling development, some gunmen have kidnapped four students of the Delta State University, Abraka, and five other travelers on the Abraka-Eku Road in the Ethiope-East local government area of the state.

The victims were identified as Arogbo Seyifunmi, Azunobi Prosper, Miracle Robert, all 500-level students of the Department of Chemistry, and Adegor Aghogho Happiness, a 500-level student of Electrical Engineering.

According to Punch, the identities of the other five travellers are still unknown.

The students recently concluded their final examinations and were travelling home for festivities when they were attacked.

A statement by the students’ union of the institution while revealing the gunmen had demanded a ransom of N5million described the incident as shameful.

The statement partly read, “It is very shameful to the state government and security agencies that they have done nothing to stop the incessant attacks on students and citizens after reports and official complaints have been made about the Eku-Abraka Expressway.”

The union called on the Delta State Government to “deploy new strategies to deal with insecurity and kidnapping in the state, especially along the Abraka-Eku Expressway.”

It urged the residents of the community to “remain calm and not resort to actions that could further endanger the lives of the kidnapped persons, as the authorities are doing all they can to rescue the abducted students.”

“We are in constant communication with the police and the state Department of State Services, and we are working with them to save the abducted students in the shortest time possible,” the statement added.
