Australian publisher and journalist Julian Paul Assange is currently being detained by the Swedish court. His hopes for release was dashed yesterday as the court upholds that he continues to stay in detention.

Known as the editor-in-chief of the website WikiLeaks, which he co-founded in 2006 after an earlier career in hacking and programming Assange achieved particular prominence in 2010 when WikiLeaks published U.S. military and diplomatic documents leaked by Chelsea Manning. Assange has been under investigation in the United States since that time.

In the same year, the Swedish Director of Public Prosecution opened an investigation into sexual offences that Assange is alleged to have committed. In 2012, facing extradition to Sweden, he was granted political asylum by Ecuador by so doing, avoiding being extradited to Sweden by taking shelter in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.

A European arrest warrant was issued to enable Swedish prosecutors to question Assange about accusations of rape and sexual molestation brought against him by two women in their 30s when he visited the country in 2010. A Swedish court was to decide whether to uphold the arrest order. Assange denying the claims said he was confident that the ruling would be in his favor.

He could be able to leave the building he was held in at the Ecuadorian embassy if the court rules in his favour. Unfortunately for him, the ruling means that the WikiLeaks founder still faces extradition to Sweden if he leaves Ecuador embassy in London.
