The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, popularly known as cooking gas, has significantly dropped in Enugu, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria.
A market survey conducted by a NAN correspondent in Enugu on Friday found that many refilling points had reduced their prices, with dealers attributing the decline to improved domestic supply, lower depot prices and increased government intervention.
Paul Okechukwu, who owns a cooking gas refilling depot at Amechi, Enugu, noted that prices had dropped compared to June, when a kilogramme sold for between N1,700 and N1,900. He said prices now range between N1,400 and N1,500, depending on the location within Enugu metropolis.
Another dealer, Obiora Ani, in the Uwani area, said the price reduction was being felt nationwide, crediting it to swift government intervention. He added that the drop had boosted his sales, as more residents have been coming in to refill their cylinders, noting that similar price reductions are being observed in other parts of the country as well.
Some residents of Enugu expressed relief over the development while calling on authorities to push prices even lower, ideally below N1,000.
Nkechi Orji, a hair stylist at Achara Layout, said the reduced price of cooking gas had cut down her household's reliance on firewood, as she now cooks most of her meals with gas, while appealing for further price reductions to ease the broader impact of high energy costs on Nigerians.
Similarly, Joy Nwafor, a restaurant owner at Garki, called on the government to further reduce the price of the product to help food vendors and restaurant owners stay in business.
