A traditional Ugandan ruler who was named the world's youngest reigning monarch has died at age 34.

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of the Tooro kingdom passed away on Thursday, his prime minister announced on Friday.

Oyo became king of Tooro in western Uganda at just three years old in 1995 after his father died.

The Tooro kingdom did not say what caused his death, but a Ugandan government minister said he had been seriously ill and was receiving treatment in the United States.

Guinness World Records listed Oyo as the world's youngest reigning monarch.

He ruled over more than two million people.

He was the 13th monarch of a kingdom that was started in the early 19th century.

Uganda is governed by an elected president, but the country still has several traditional kingdoms that hold significant cultural importance even though they do not have political power.

The Tooro Prime Minister called his passing an immeasurable loss to the royal family and the people of Tooro.

"I call upon all the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time," the prime minister said.

"May His Majesty the King rest in eternal peace."

Oyo was not officially married, but the prime minister said the kingdom's future is secure.

He said the king leaves behind a prince who will be his heir.

The identity of the heir will be revealed at the appropriate time following Tooro kingdom traditions.

When Oyo became king in 1995, a regency that included the queen mother was set up to rule until he turned 18, when an official coronation happened.

The young king was well respected by his people.

He championed youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and HIV and AIDS awareness.

The Buganda Kingdom, Uganda's largest and most powerful traditional institution, mourned with the people of Tooro and called Oyo a valuable figure for Uganda.
