Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has said correctional facilities should focus on reforming inmates rather than simply punishing them.

Represented by Malam Nasiru Abbas at a Nigerian Correctional Service Security and Welfare Agenda Conference Graduation Ceremony in Kaduna, Sani stressed that imprisonment gives people a chance to reflect, correct mistakes and prepare for life outside prison walls.

Sani drew from his own experience in Kaduna Prison and other correctional facilities, which gave him deeper insight into prison life.

He said this personal background made the occasion meaningful though he could not attend due to a prior commitment.

Many people have never visited a prison or police cell, Sani noted, making it hard for them to grasp what correctional centres should achieve.

Being behind bars does not automatically mark someone as dangerous or evil.

Instead, prisons offer chances to learn, build character and reshape perspectives on life.

Correctional centres should help inmates develop strength to face challenges, endure hardship and see their futures differently, he said.

The focus should be on rehabilitation and readiness for return to society rather than punishment alone.
