Philanthropist Raises Alarm Over Hungry Elderly Nigerians

Philanthropist Ben Edem has urged Nigeria's Federal Government to prioritize food security and welfare for elderly citizens struggling with hunger in rural and low-income areas.

Edem said many older people worked hard their whole lives but can no longer afford food.

Some have lost spouses or children.

Others live with relatives also facing financial hardship.

He called this a quiet humanitarian crisis that most people ignore.

While many aid programmes focus on children and families, elderly people are often left out.

Edem started a Local Food Bank for the Elderly under the Rural Food Bank Support Foundation.

It provides rice, beans, garri, noodles, oil, seasoning and toiletries to vulnerable seniors in Lagos and Ogun states.

Volunteers visit homebound elderly people, offer companionship and give small grants to help some restart small businesses.

The programme has reached thousands of elderly people across more than 30 communities.

Edem said the food packs do more than fill stomachs.

They restore hope and remind beneficiaries they are not alone.

He called for stronger partnerships with government agencies, businesses, churches and individuals to expand support.

Lasting change requires the Federal Government to make consistent food programmes and practical support systems for elderly citizens a priority, advocates say.
