African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has promised to tackle electoral malpractice, make INEC more independent and bring down the cost of basic needs if he becomes president.

He said this on Thursday in an address at the party's national headquarters in Abuja to mark Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary.

He promised quick publication of results from every polling unit and said anyone involved in vote buying or result manipulation will be prosecuted, no matter their party.

He urged Nigerians to protect their votes, resist intimidation and look closely at candidates ahead of the 2027 elections, adding that campaign promises must come with measurable plans.

He said the coming election offers a peaceful way to choose the country's course and that the country belongs to the people.

On the economy, the former vice president promised to cut the prices of food, petrol and electricity and improve healthcare, education and transport.

He also pledged to tackle insecurity, create jobs and ensure transparency in public spending.

Atiku proposed a budgeted and capped subsidy for locally refined petrol, including from modular refineries, but not for imported fuel.

He said this would lower pump prices.

He said the costs would be published, payments independently audited and government waste cut to help fund the plan.

He also called for fair application of the law and pointed to the detention of Sheikh Sani Khalifa Zaria and Malam Nasir El-Rufai as cases that raise questions about due process.

He said Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's right to appeal his conviction must be respected.

Atiku urged Nigerians to hold elected officials to account and demand openness in budgets, project delivery and governance.

He said his administration would put economic relief, public safety, job creation and protection of democratic institutions first.
