A 15-year-old boy has been arrested following the death of a 10-year-old Colorado girl who went missing on Wednesday.
According to Thornton Police Department on Sunday, Campbell Kiaya had set out on a walk to a shopping center with her father’s girlfriend’s 15-year-old son about 8 p.m. Wednesday, her dad told police, according to local Fox affiliate KDVR. The boy reportedly told police he’d gotten separated from Campbell after a storm rolled in.
Police on Sunday did not specify whether he was the same 15-year-old arrested, declining to release the suspect’s name due to his juvenile status, KDVR reported.
Authorities on Thursday issued an Amber Alert for Campbell, who had last been seen wearing an orange Denver Broncos shirt. Her body was found that night in a grassy area about a mile from her house.
The tween had maintained an active YouTube presence, posting recent videos opening a Pokémon card and showing off her new glasses. In a December video titled “can i sing good i'm 10,” Campbell belted out “Part of Your World” from “The Little Mermaid.”
A GoFundMe campaign from the girl’s mother, Chantel Campbell, outraised its $10,000 fund-raising goal for a memorial service. “This beautiful soul was stolen from us. We appreciate everything everyone has done in this situation,” read a message on the page. “Now we just appreciate anything anyone can do to help out her to rest.”
Thornton Mayor Heidi Williams in a statement Friday mourned “the loss of such a beautiful child.”
“We pray for strength and compassion for those close to Kiaya in the coming days and weeks,” she said.
