The heartwarming moment an adopted man came face to face with his birth father who didn't know he existed has left many people overwhelmed.

New Zealander Alex Gilbert tracked down both his biological parents through social media after he was adopted from a Russian orphanage when he was two.

Alex, 25, who was born in Arkhangelsk, near the Arctic Circle, but moved to Whangarei where he grew up, said he has formed a close relationship with Mihail Kovkov since meeting him in 2013.

Mr Kovkov was not even aware he had a son when Alex contacted him after he managed to find his birth mother Tatiana Gusovskaia. In a video uploaded to YouTube last week , Alex explained Mihail was left overwhelmed following their first encounter.

The footage includes the pair embracing for the first time after meeting one another.

Alex said: "When I told my mum and dad that I had been in touch with my birth father after him not even knowing I existed was quite a shock for all of us, and we didn't know what was going to be in store.

"I understand that he was just really overwhelmed about absolutely everything and he thanked me constantly, to my mum and dad for raising me and making me who I am today."

In the video, also posted to Mr Gilbert's Facebook page, Mr Kovkov praises his son. He said: "Sasha, I am very thankful for you for just being you. You found me at last and you did it by yourself.

"I will say again, I didn't know about your existence, so I would like to thank you so much."

Two years later, Mr Kovkov met with Alex's adoptive parents Mark and Janice Gilbert after telling his son he wanted to thank the couple. Alex said his family had "grown bigger" since he met his birth parents.

He added: "I really respect (Mihail) so much and because he's opened up that door for me, into his life.

"And he's let me into his family, and with my mum and dad we have this relationship now where our family has grown bigger and he's part of that.

"Our personalities are very similar and if you saw us walking down the street of course you know we would be related."

Alex set up the I'm Adopted website in 2015 for others to share their stories and receive help tracing their birth families.
