A passenger jet was forced to make an emergency landing after a man 'threatened' passengers and said he wanted to 'kill people'.

American Airlines Flight 622 from Phoenix, Arizona, to New York City was carrying 128 passengers when it left Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport on Tuesday.

Indie band 'The Augustines' were travelling on the plane. They broke the news when they tweeted: "Whoa. Emergency landing in Witchita.

"Passenger threatening the plane that he wants to kill people. Bad scene."

A photo tweeted by the band showed airport police surrounding a man in the plane's aisle.

The passenger who threatened the others was identified as a38-year-old man named, Jason Baroletti. He was removed from the flight when it landed in Kansas.

He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on a federal count of criminal threat, cause of terror, and evacuation or disruption.

The flight continued following the incident and the jet landed in New York City a few hours later.
