You are Destroying Destinies - UNN Alumnus Pens Open Letter to VC Over Compulsory N70k Laptop Fee

Posted by Odinaka on Mon 09th Nov, 2015 - tori.ng

An open letter written by an aggrieved alumnus of the University of Nigeria (UNN) to the VC and the SUG president of the school, has gone viral. Find out the shocking content of the letter.

A Facebook user identified as UNN Voice Via Rhymzo, who is an alumnus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN), yesterday, took to the social media platform to bring to public attention an ongoing practice in the federal university where new students are being required to pay N70,000 each for a laptop, a policy the current Vice Chancellor claims is for ICT empowerment.

"These poor freshers you have asked to pay for laptop before they do their clearance or apply for hostel, if you were a poor man and such a thing was done to you, would you be happy,?" Rhymzo writes.

Rhymzo also accused the SUG President of keeping mum on all the social issues students are put through in the school. "Students voted you in for you to be there and speak for their welfare and not for you to answer SUG president," he stated.

UNN Vice-Chancellor: Professor Benjamin C. Ozumba.

Below is the open letter in full:

AN OPEN LETTER TO UNN VC AND SUG PRESIDENT:

I remember when I was in school, when things were done the way it should be done, when someone cannot just wake up in the morning and enforce a selfish law in the school because he is the VC, when students dont use to suffer, when there were cheap and affordable restuarants inside the campus, when UNN was a school both for the rich and the poor, when you cant distinguish the rich from the poor in UNN, when there were social lives in UNN, when UNN was fun, when UNN was UNN, when the people in charge saw and treated the students like their own children, when SUG officials used to have the welfare of the students at heart and not selfish desires, when SUG officials used to stand out and fight for the students without any fear…hmmm.

Now things have changed, now things are different, things have fallen apart, UNN now restores the madness in man instead of dignity, UNN is now like a hell fire instead of the lions den, UNN is now like a state university, UNN is now a school without conscience, UNN is no longer UNN.

TO THE VC:
  • These poor freshers you have asked to pay for laptop before they do their clearance or apply for hostel, if you were a poor man and such a thing was done to you, would you be happy?
  • Did you tell them about this before they chose UNN?
  •  I know during your time, there may not be laptop but what if you were mandated to pay for a type writer before you would be allowed to go to school after paying all the necessary fees?
  • You and your so called committee, were you all born with silver spoon during your time?
  • Some of you were under scholarship during your time, why mandating those who want to make it through university by their hard earned money and sweat to pay for laptops?
  • Why are you denying some people from actualising their dreams in UNN?
  • I want you to know that you are destroying destinies, delaying dreams, frustrating lives and encouraging crimes indirectly.
  • A Good name is better than a bad name.

TO THE SUG PRESIDENT:
  • Students voted you in for you to be there and speak for their welfare and not for you to answer SUG president.
  • I remember when UNN changed shuttle route making it difficult for students to enter shuttle any where inside campus and how the new ones then     trecked during their putme, you kept quiet.
  • UNN added money to the internet fee, you didnt do anything about it.
  • Light and water supply are not always steady inside the campus, you keep quiet.
  • UNN will fix exam timetable which will be unfavourable to the students, you keep quiet.
  • Now the freshers whom you are supposed to protect and fight for their welfare are confused and passing through emotional trauma because they are helpless and have no one to speak for them over this laptop saga, you stil keep quiet.
  • Am sure you must have heard about those who were before you and the legacy they left behind such as Fundamental from Veterinary medicine, KJ from Enginering, Mamah Collins from social sciences, etc.
You are responsible for all these brutality and barbarousness on these students. You have failed the old ones and you are about to fail the new ones.

Stand up and fight for the purpose which you were voted in, stand up and hear their voices, stand up and excercise your power, if you are scared, peacefully resign so that someone with no fear can take the office.

Stand up! please stand up!!

Drop your own words for the VC and SUG president.

I rest my case.
