Why Buhari's Asset Declaration Wasn't Made Public - President's Aides

Posted by Nicholas on Mon 01st Jun, 2015 - tori.ng

Aides to the newly inaugurated President of Nigeria, have revealed that Nigerians should be patient as Buhari and Osinbajo are still going to declare their assets publicly, even if it was first done in secret.

Most Nigerians were angered when they heard that President Muhammadu Buhari declared his assets secretly. This cause some friction because Buhari was quoted to have said he would declare his assets publicly if he should win.

Well, his aides yesterday explained why the president-elect is yet to make his asset declaration public, according to the Vanguard.

They said he will make his assets known to Nigerians within the first 100 days of his stay in power in line with his assertions before the election.

This follows calls from a civil rights group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, for the President and VP Yemi Osinbajo to make public their assets.

It said the action will indicate “their desire and commitment to ending corruption in the country.”

However it is believed that public officials, after filling the asset declaration form, submit it to the Code of Conduct Bureau for verification.

Research is then made into the information provided on the form for a period of 30 days after which it might be declared public.

One can also personally get it by invoking the FOI bill.

However one can't but wonder why a simple photocopy of the form isn't made available to any media house to quell public curiosity.
