The Adamawa state government has threatened to punish teachers and students for not returning to school upon resumption.

Wilbina Jackson, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development in Adamawa decried low attendance of teachers and students, a week after the schools reopened.

The schools reopened on January 10, for the second term 2021 academic session across 20 local government areas.

Mrs Jackson expressed the concern on Wednesday in Yola, noting that “we’ll not tolerate such bad attitudes from both teachers and students.”

She added, “Government is taking punitive measures against any teacher or student that failed to resume on the resumption date to serve as a deterrent to others.”

The commissioner stated the ministry would punish teachers and students for truancy, adding that, “all public, primary and secondary schools resumed last week from New Year vacation.

“However, we received a report that the turnout of students, particularly in government schools, is very low,” she added.

Mrs Jackson warned that the ministry would not condone the violation of its rules.
