Sunday Ohakwu, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State, has claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is uneasy over what he described as the rising popularity of Rotimi Amaechi.

Ohakwu spoke in Abuja on Wednesday.

He claimed there is a plot to arrest Amaechi, a former federal minister, whom he described as a leading presidential aspirant of the ADC.

According to him, the move is aimed at weakening the opposition party ahead of the next general election.

“We have discovered that the plot is to arrest the top opposition political figure,” he said.

“We strongly have it in our discovery that the plot is being coordinated by a top security official in the APC government, in the presidency, and could happen anytime soon, barring any last-minute change of plans.”

Ohakwu alleged that several meetings had been held in recent weeks to identify grounds for anti-graft agencies to arrest and prosecute Amaechi.

“In the past weeks, several meetings have been held, with a small committee formed to find and provide waterproof grounds and reasons for anti-graft agencies like the ICPC or EFCC or even the DSS to arrest, detain and then prosecute the ADC presidential hopeful using the courts,” he said.

“As part of their aggressive efforts to find reasons and evidence to nail him for prosecution in the courts, various teams are currently looking at State records, accounts and properties in Rivers State, Lagos State and Abuja, looking for a full-proof, watertight case that will lead to the arrest and trial of Amaechi.”

Ohakwu added that Amaechi’s tenure as minister of transportation under the Muhammadu Buhari administration had also been investigated in a bid to find incriminating evidence.

He said the ploy to intimidate Amaechi or distract the party from the presidential race would fail.

“We want to let them know that whatever plots they are planning against our leader is already dead on arrival. Nigeria will not accept any witch-hunt or acts to distract or intimidate our party or our leader,” he added.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers state, has been critical of the APC-led federal government and is seeking the presidency on the ADC platform.
