Kogi Distributes 2500 Life Jackets to Boat Operators

The Kogi State Government has distributed 2,500 life jackets to members of the Maritime Workers Union as an initiative to strengthen waterway safety and mitigate boat-related incidents across the state.

The Commissioner for Transportation presented the equipment to beneficiaries during a ceremony in Lokoja on Thursday, characterising the distribution as a pivotal advancement in maritime transportation safety.

While acknowledging the importance of the life jackets, the commissioner stressed that safety equipment alone would not suffice, urging boat operators and passengers to adhere rigorously to navigation regulations and deploy the equipment correctly to prevent unnecessary fatalities.

The state administration has partnered with the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and allied stakeholders to establish a more secure transportation network safeguarding both passengers and operators.

The commissioner commended the President's waterway safety initiatives and called for expanded federal interventions to bolster maritime security, whilst also praising the state governor for his commitment to public safety compliance and riverine community development.

The Kogi Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union expressed gratitude to the Federal and state governments, characterising the distribution as a major achievement for the organisation.

He assured authorities that recipients would use the life jackets responsibly and observe water traffic regulations, though he requested additional safety equipment and sustained institutional cooperation.

Officials from the National Inland Waterways Authority commended the state initiative and pledged continued collaboration to reduce waterway accidents.

The State Emergency Management Agency pledged enhanced coordination with transportation authorities, operators, communities and other relevant bodies to elevate water safety standards, public awareness and emergency preparedness.

The agency's leadership underscored life jackets as among the most straightforward and effective interventions for minimising fatalities in boat mishaps and water-related crises.

Representatives from the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission described the intervention as timely and life-preserving for communities dependent on water transportation and pledged sustained organisational support for state development efforts.

They called for strengthened enforcement of navigation regulations by the waterways authority and marine law enforcement.

The Marine Police command acknowledged the donation's timeliness given elevated water levels across regional waterways and stressed mandatory compliance with traffic regulations.

Officials disclosed ongoing preparations to establish a mobile tribunal for prosecuting regulation violations and deterring further breaches, whilst advocating for reinforced coordination among enforcement agencies.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society commended the initiative as evidence of Federal and state commitment to protecting lives in waterside communities and assured continued organisational support for disaster readiness and water safety programming.

The event concluded with a practical demonstration on proper life jacket application and additional waterway safety protocols.
