DeeOne Fires Warning at IGP Over Police Recording Controversy

Comedian DeeOne has warned the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, to be careful with his statements because they could spark unrest in Nigeria.

DeeOne was responding to the IGP's recent comment asking Nigerians to stop recording police officers while they're on duty.

The IGP said the practice was demoralizing to the force and asked citizens to give officers space to work.

But DeeOne thinks this is a dangerous message to send.

In a video that went viral online, he pointed out that the whole EndSARS protest movement started because of videos showing police brutality and misconduct.

So telling people not to record officers makes no sense when those recordings are actually meant to protect citizens.

He argued that many police officers on Nigerian streets are not in the right state of mind to be carrying guns.

Some show up to work drunk, and their colleagues know it but do nothing.

If you're going to put armed people like that on the roads, citizens absolutely have the right to record for their own safety.

That's just common sense protection, he said.

DeeOne stressed that the IGP's careless statement could easily trigger another major protest in the country.

He warned that remarks like this embolden bad officers to intimidate and harass people, knowing there's pressure from above to stop people from documenting their actions.

He called on the IGP to shift focus from making statements that upset the police force to actually building harmony between officers and everyday Nigerians.

The job of a leader, he said, is to ensure peace between the two sides, not to take sides with the police over citizens' basic rights.

He also praised the Nigerian Bar Association for speaking up against the IGP's statement and called for him to stop making reckless comments just to impress the police.
