Clearlake Takes Full Control of Chelsea as Boehly Exits

Clearlake Capital has officially taken full control of Chelsea, bringing Todd Boehly's time as club chairman to an end.

The club announced late Wednesday that Clearlake, headed by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, bought out the shares owned by Boehly and fellow director Mark Walter.

Boehly and Walter originally teamed up with Clearlake to buy Chelsea back in May 2022 after the UK government forced previous owner Roman Abramovich to sell.

 

Before this new deal, Clearlake held a 61.5 percent stake, while Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss split the rest.

 

Chelsea confirmed that Wyss will stay on as part of the ownership group.

Following the announcement, Chelsea released a statement emphasizing that their main goal remains unchanged: to win major trophies and build long-term success at the top level.

Chelsea manager Alonso, who took over on July 1, called the news a major moment for the club.

 

Speaking ahead of Friday's Premier League clash with Brentford, he thanked the outgoing owners for their contributions and welcomed the newfound clarity at the top.

Alonso shared that he already has a strong working relationship with Eghbali, noting that Eghbali was the one who traveled to Madrid to pitch the Chelsea project to him.

 

He added that while building a winning team takes time, everyone at the club is aligned on what they want to achieve.

Since the 2022 takeover, Chelsea's best league finish was fourth place in the 2024/25 season, during which they also lifted the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup trophies.

 

However, after dropping to a disappointing 10th-place finish last season, the club brought in the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss to turn things around.

 

Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League table after picking up seven points from their opening four matches.
