Ebonyi Retirees Cry Out as Over 200 Former Workers Die Waiting for Benefits

Retired workers of Ebonyi State University say hundreds of former staff members have died waiting for unpaid pensions and gratuities.

They appealed to the government and university management in videos posted online.

The retirees say they cannot afford food, medication or their children's school fees.

At least 209 former staff have died since the group started tracking unpaid benefits.

Many more are still sick.

One retiree worked 43 years and left with nothing.

Another spent over three decades at the university and is now blind.

He lost his sight while still working and depends on his wife to help him teach.

A man who started work in 1992 retired on September 1, 2025 and has received no pension or gratuity since.

He has no money to support himself.

Another retiree's husband is seriously ill but the family cannot afford treatment.

Her husband needs care and she has no resources.

One former worker has two swollen legs and can barely walk.

He said he was agile before but now cannot move freely.

The government refused to give him his entitlements.

A man said even a small monthly pension of 20,000 naira would give him hope and help him survive.

After retirement, he cannot feed himself or pay his children's school fees.

The retirees appealed to the governor and university to pay what they are owed.

They worked decades serving the state.

Pay us while we're alive, they said.

Many more will die waiting.
